An Evening with Accoustic Guitar Player of the Year!

Monte Montgomery

Cover: 10

Monte Montgomery has taken the acoustic guitar beyond anyone's expectations. With his amazing fretwork, unique combination finger and pick style playing through trailblazing "chordal" thoroughfares often baffling even the most accomplished players. While Monte remains a huge enigma in the guitar universe, his legendary reputation has spread like wildfire since he appeared on Austin City Limits. In 2004 Monte was named on Guitar Player Magazine's list of "Top 50 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time" and in 2005 he was featured the Covers of "Frets" and "Acoustic Guitar" magazines. Countless articles have been written about Monte describing him "The Evel Knivel of Guitar", "Six Strings Attached To Dynamite", "The Answer To The Fermi Paradox" and "The Acoustic Shred Master" just to name a few. Monte's fretwork has become the benchmark for acoustic guitar players. "An American Original", there is no doubt Monte Montgomery is destined to become An American Legend.

In spite of all the "six-string notoriety", and just in case you didn't "know-tice", Monte isn't just a "guitar hero", "shred master" or "guitar god" as he's most often described. No, actually Monte Montgomery is much more than just a world-class guitar virtuoso with more new tricks up his fret board than your average "guitar slinger". What sets Monte apart from all others is that he's one of the most accomplished songwriters of our time, a remarkable singer and an extraordinary music arranger. Many of Monte's fans attend his concerts simply to hear his compelling vocals as he delivers his finely penned songs powerfully and passionately. To some, his incredible guitar pyrotechnics are simply an addition of tasty icing topping off a delicious cake.

Monte's latest release "Monte Montgomery At WorkPlay" (Harmonic Records - 2005), available in CD and DVD versions is a double barrel treat offering fans a visual dimension of Monte's incredible power packed live performance recorded Live at WorkPlay Theater in Birmingham, Alabama.

Monte grew up immersed in music, playing professionally since his teens and is currently one of the hottest draws on the talent-packed Austin, TX music scene and throughout the U.S. where he is well known for his electrifying performances. Monte was the first ever to be named by Guitar One Magazine on their list of Top 10 Best Undiscovered Guitarists in America and is the only winner of the "Best Acoustic Guitar Player" for 7 Years in a Row at the Austin Music Awards.

As Acoustic Guitar Magazine notes, "Monte Montgomery is not your typical up-and-coming guitar god. His exquisitely crafted, melodically and rhythmically sophisticated pop songs suggest the best of Fleetwood Mac, Squeeze and The Police, while just happening to integrate the most mind-boggling guitar work in the state of Texas."

Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, Monte first learned piano and trumpet, and was an avid listener to pop radio. After moving to Texas at the age of 12, he joined the legendary musical scene around the restored town of Luckenbach and began his impressive rise as a musical talent. Performing with his mother at a popular Hill Country picking parlor he quickly absorbed everything he could. By his mid-teens, Monte was playing gigs on his own around Austin and San Antonio, both with bands as an electric guitarist and in a variety of acoustic configurations. During this time Monte developed his guitar chops as he absorbed the work of respected players such as Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham, Mark Knopfler, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Lee, Steve Vai, Steve Morse and Larry Carlton. "I like it all," he explains of his musical influences.

Leading his own band, Monte began developing his trademark electrified acoustic guitar style. "I started playing acoustic at the beginning of each set, the response was so overwhelming that I kept the acoustic up there longer and longer.  Then I just started playing all acoustic. I found I could do anything on an acoustic guitar I could do on an electric if I turned it up loud enough."

After living and playing in San Antonio for a time, Monte set out to make his mark in the highly competitive Austin musical community. Starting with a $50 half-hour gig at a small Austin Pub on a Tuesday night, Monte quickly attracted packed houses and graduated to filling the biggest clubs in the city. His live performances and albums have earned him words of praise in the music press and an ever-widening touring circuit throughout the U.S. As Texas Monthly noted, "He brings taste, precision, economy and a playful sense of timing to popish songs with sturdy hooks and sings in a voice that's equal parts grit and sunshine. And when you have the ability to make one guitar sound like two, who needs any more support than bass and drums."

Monte caught the ear of Austin City Limits producer Terry Lickona, who invited the relatively unknown talent to tape a segment of the legendary show. When Lickona introduced Monte to the audience, he described Monte's talent in a simple yet profound statement: "Monte Montgomery blows people away. There is no other way to describe it."

When word about Monte's virtuosity reached the folks at Alvarez Guitars. They quickly took a keen interest and secured Monte's endorsement. In the meantime Monte's reputation as the Hottest Acoustic Guitarist on the planet was being cultivated as he toured nationwide. This led to the introduction of the MMY-1 Monte Montgomery Signature Guitar , which was unveiled at the Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, California in January 2004.

Monte's considerable musical talents have come to fruition. As leader of his own band, he continues as a national touring act and has shown a side that's more than a new found "Texas Guitar Slinger". His electrifying live shows deliver a dynamic rock n' roll experience with rich, stunning guitar work and powerful song deliveries. Monte sings and writes songs that are concise and contemporary and although his music contains a lot of guitar it's more than just a guitar show. With an appeal that extends to listeners of all ages and tastes, Monte has been making a living playing and singing for most of his life, building a career through his own hard work and talent. In fact, it's almost as if his future as a musician was all but fated. "I never woke up and said, what am I supposed to be doing with my life? I always knew, even before I played guitar, that I was going to be doing music, one way or another."

Stymie and the Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra

Cover 10$

The California Honeydrops are the Bay Area’s newest and most authentic Roots and Blues ensemble. Influenced by artists such as Robert Johnson, Professor Longhair, and the Soul Stirrers, this group of young musicians breathes new life and inspiration into the nearly forgotten music of the American South. Combining the styles of ragtime, blues, gospel and soul all in an acoustic jug band format--one thing is certain: there is no other band like the California Honeydrops.

Born in Chico, raised up at Burning Man, and brought to urban fruition in Oakland, California, the Loyd Family Players take the pulse of traditional Brazilian samba and twist it into a loud, sweaty, sexy muss that's all their very own. The ten-to-twenty-person coed percussion troupe swipes elements from hip-hop, dancehall, punk rock, drum n'bass, summer camp...anything goes. With members hailing from such exotic locales as England, Brazil, Rome, Peru, Antarctica, and Long Island, the Loyds are a foxy, unstoppable (and unstoppably foxy) dance machine. In the last several years the Loyds have earned a reputation as a commanding and jubilant festival band for their massive, moving performances. These shows sweep people into the parade, whether the band is passing through fairgrounds or taking the floor during a set change, making for an inclusive musical experience that keeps the band with the people and the people inside the music.

Stymie & the PJLO's instrumentation and presentation recalls classic funk groups like Funkadelic and Sly and The Family Stone, yet the music is 100% original, blending all the musical influences, modern cultural craziness, and cartoon humor that affect our lives.

By eschewing cover songs to concentrate on crafting soulful, socially conscious originals, Stymie and his behemoth band have injected new life into the flailing San Francisco music scene and are proud to announce the release of The Secret Hits of the Black & Blue Parade.

Besides opening for funk legends Earth, Wind, and Fire at Californias Shoreline Amphitheater and Concord Pavilion, Stymie & the PJLO have paid dues at such venerable San Francisco clubs as Slims, Bimbos, the Elbo Room, the Bottom of the Hill, Tongue and Groove, and the Paradise Lounge.

The groups sound incorporates elements of rock, jazz, hip-hop, pop, reggae, Latin, and gospel, while maintaining a soulful funkiness and nastiness that throws audiences into a frenzy.

At one show, P-Funk All-stars guitarist John Payne was inspired to leap on stage and jam with the band on "Fan Club," a bouncy mixture of James Brown grooves, whimsical horn vamps, and hot swing breaks. The song was described by All Music Guides John Bush as "the most entertaining" on that album.

Billy Preston was impressed, too. When Stymie & the PJLO was hired to play a musical tribute to the funk icon, Preston was moved to join them on stage, later saying, "I dig you guys. You remind me of early Sly & the Family Stone."

Geva Alon is one of the most versatile and accomplished Israeli singer-songwriters of the last decade. He was born in a small Kibbutz (Then still a socialist commune-like community) close to the ruins of Caesarea. He wrote his first song at the age of 14 and took the guitar seriously, practicing countless hours as a kid. As the founder & leader of "the flying baby" – probably the most powerful rock trio Israel has ever produced – he became known as an extraordinary & inventive guitar-player, capable of both hot-fierce fret-work solos and long slow moving jams into the unknown. But Alon is more then that – a gifted songwriter, he wrote all the lyrics & music to the band's songs. As a singer he possessed a haunting & surprising vocal register - sometimes comparable to early Neil young.

With the band Alon had recorded 3 albums (their debut is still officially unreleased). Their second album, "inner world" (2001) was hailed as "The best non-Hebrew Israeli rock album since ("the Churchills" legendary psych LP from) 1968". The Band toured extensively all over California for sixteen months & played mostly in & around the bay area. "Pain to give"- their 3rd album was released in 2004 on the "Blue Sun Music" Label to rave reviews. It contained dark memorable moments such as "Doorway To Simplicity" (with a great & gloomy Tom Verlaine's "Feel") alongside long excursions as "Bound To Go Crazy".

In 2006 Geva Alon released his debut solo album "Days Of Hunger". This was a surprising acoustic-based effort, with country-rock & acid-folk edge that met with a tremendous success in Israel.   Alon's live performances, usually in small Tell Aviv clubs, drew more & more people in the last 3 years, and he is regarded as a great performer with a "take-no-prisoners" attitude & a tendency for long surprising guitar workouts.  "The Wall Of Sound", Geva's latest solo album was a much more rock-oriented journey. A well crafted combination between The Flying Baby's electric power, a dose of pop sensibilities and the acoustic "feel" of his debut. The album sold a couple of thousand copies 3 weeks after its release & the single "Modern Love", an emotional acoustic take on Bowie (the only cover on an all-original album) became an instant hit in Israel. Now he is back at the NY scene with 2 Guitars, 10 fingers (thank God!) and some amazing songs for a series of rare live shows far from the holy-land. Don't miss the guy! He's a good one!

The Gibson Brothers Band (2 sets!)

Homespun Rowdy

Cover: 10

From the front porch of the farm house they grew up in outside the town of Ellenburg Depot, New York, Eric and Leigh Gibson could see a place called Lyon Mountain. It was famous for two things: iron ore mining and town baseball. It was from these elements, and their geographical source, that The Gibson Brothers drew the inspiration for their April 2008 Sugar Hill release, Iron & Diamonds.

Lyon Mountain is part of the Adirondacks, the northernmost portion of Appalachia. Most people don’t equate upstate New York with farming, mining, Appalachia, or traditional music, but it’s all there. Though the brothers never mined iron, they did play baseball on the Lyon Mountain Miners team, and they shoveled snow and more on their family’s dairy farm just a few miles from the Canadian border. And at the age of 12 (Eric) and 11 (Leigh), they picked up a banjo and guitar and began their musical journey.

Eric says, “Our father and mother had instruments around the house. A guy was teaching banjo and guitar up at Dick’s Country Store and he gave us a tape of Sweet Temptation and Flatt & Scruggs at Carnegie Hall.”

They began singing after their minister suggested it and they also began listening to the great duo sounds from the past. Leigh remembers, “When I heard Buck Owens and Don Rich singing, it really clicked for me.” Then they discovered the Louvin Brothers, the Delmore Brothers, the Blue Sky Boys, the Everly Brothers, and the Stanley Brothers. It was a tradition waiting for them.

In the early 1990s, they formed a bluegrass band with Eric on banjo, Leigh on guitar, Junior Barber on dobro, and Junior’s son, Mike, on bass. Mike is still with them and is regarded as a third brother.

In the coming years they recorded three well-received albums and won the 1998 IBMA Emerging Artist of the Year award. In 2005, the brothers signed with Sugar Hill Records. Their first release with the label, Bona Fide, went to #1 on the Bluegrass Unlimited album chart and placed high on the Americana and Billboard charts as well. Two more releases followed -- Long Way Back Home and Red Letter Day. These albums solidified the brothers’ reputation as singers, players, and songwriters.

Now, with this new release, Iron & Diamonds, Eric and Leigh have taken their place on the American jukebox. The Gibsons have made a conscious effort to co-write most of the songs on this album. And by using their own band and a single microphone for their duet vocals, you hear exactly what you hear in a live show: a tight ensemble that plays to the song, toneful and nuanced lead and duet harmonies, and songs that can move you to tears or to the dance floor.

But they’re also aware of how a collection of songs should be selected, arranged, recorded, and ordered so that it creates a complete listening experience. They start with a Tom Petty song, “Cabin Down Below,” that jumps out of the speakers like some runaway rockabilly hit.

It’s followed by the title track, “Iron & Diamonds,” about the miners and ballplayers from Lyon Mountain. The chorus shows just how steeped in baseball the brothers are, but it also cuts to the core of the miner’s experience.

Around the horn, a can of corn,
A ground ball will get you two,
A life of iron and diamonds
Is all the miners knew.

Great duos are powerful not because the individuals sound similar to each other, but because they have something unique in each voice that complements the other. In the case of the Gibson Brothers, it’s Leigh’s warmer tones and Eric’s high-lonesome intensity that create a great double-stop fiddle sound, a blending of experience and emotion that all great brother duets have.

Their decision to record their vocals together really paid off. If you want to hear a song that could easily pass for an Everly Brothers hit, listen to “Lonely Me, Lonely You.” And the Steve Earle song “The Other Side of Town,” sounds like it was written specifically for the Gibsons. “Picker’s Blues” is one of the few bluegrass songs that actually gets to the truth about life on the road. And “One Step Closer to the Grave” echoes the great bluegrass songs of sin and salvation. The Gibsons never flinch from the truth that a song reveals, and the listener feels that too. Every word seems necessary and just right.

The Gibson Brothers’ band includes Mike Barber on bass, Clayton Campbell on Fiddle, and Rick Hayes on Mandolin. And for this recording, former Gibson Brothers’ dobroist Junior Barber makes a guest appearance, and their sister Erin sings on the concluding gospel song, a Bill Carlisle gem, “Gone Home.” All the players on this album have spent time on the road with the brothers, have learned how to play to the song and to the vocals, and it shows. The playing can be loving or fiery according to the songs’ demands.

With Iron & Diamonds, the Gibson Brothers have given us their music straight-up -- no pretence, no guile -- just great songs, a seasoned band, and brother vocals that go right to the heart.

·    Patrick Winningham, famous brother of Mare Winningham, started the Patrick Winningham Band in San Francisco in 1984.  Their musical styling’s are drawn from westerns, Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt.  The bands biggest moment was when they were chosen to play a big role in the 1986 hit movie “St. Elmo’s Fire.”  The Patrick Winningham Band broke up in 1993 when the bands lead guitar player (Dan Vickrey) and keyboard (Charlie Gillingham) player left the band to join Counting Crows on their first tour after the album “August and Everything After” forever changed the music scene.
·    Glider is the brainstorm of longtime friends and musical compadres Jim Bogios (drums-Counting Crows, Sheryl Crow, Ben Folds) and David Immergluck (guitar-Counting Crows, John Hiatt). The group is rounded out by Dan Eisenberg (keyboards-Ryan Adams, Jonathan Richman) and Yoshi Sako (bass-Beatropolis, Syncrosystem).  For the show at Starry Plough, Millard “Lone Wolf” Powers from Counting Crows, Ben Folds will be joining Glider on bass as Yoshi will be in Japan.

Glider formed in 1998 as an excuse for some friends to play music together whenever they were in town. Immergluck and Bogios found it increasingly difficult to even share a meal together let alone book a gig due to conflicting Crow schedules. As fate would have it though, Bogios left Sheryl for Counting in January 2003 and Glider has been going strong since then. The band plays its own unique style mixing many musical influences that span the globe.... from the Middle Eastern deserts to the bustling downtown Italian streets, through the California waves and beyond.

One of Glider's biggest assets is their musical ESP and insight into one another that only comes about from years of gigs and sessions...Many bands, many lands all brought together for you in one epic group.

·    Aidan Hawken heard something in his head he was not achieving within the confines of his old band, Highwater Rising, and in 2004 he struck out on his own again. Assembling a dream team of studio pros including San Francisco luminary Chuck Prophet, Jim Bogios of Counting Crows, Tom Ayres of Persephone's Bees, Brett Simons of The Heartbreakers, and Highwater Rising’s Jason Borger and JJ Wiesler, Aidan recorded his first proper solo effort in the spring of 2005, Pillows and Records. A gorgeous collection that veers from the modern rock stylings of Highwater Rising to a quieter place that possibly reflected the changes Aidan had undergone in his personal life, P&R demonstrated an affinity for quirkier production, alt-country arrangements and even a bit of garage rock distortion.

With Aidan’s new collection, The Sleep of Trees, it seems like he’s off again… and again he has assembled a dream team of musicians.  Jim Bogios and David Bryson Counting Crows, as well as Marty Jones, the namesake of Counting Crows hit song Mr. Jones and many other talented musicians contributed to Aidan’s new collection.  Jim, David and Marty will be joining Aidan at the Starry Plough Show in their first show ever outside the studio.
·    Those of you who have followed Counting Crows stellar career, might have noticed that every single current member of the band will be playing this show, except Adam Duritz, of course.  Adam, however, will be in Berkeley that night and we may even see him at the show!

Or, the Whale is the band that if ever caught off guard by an onstage power outage would say, “Fuck it,” pull in tighter, and play and sing harder and louder than you’d hoped for in the first place.

Sure, the San Francisco-based band harbors seven members, so you could argue for strength in numbers. But writing off the impression that they inevitably leave isn’t so easy; with such a diverse group of musicians, there’s no shortage of skill and influence. Some members toured in punk bands, others played roots and funk music, and still another tested her pipes as a chamber music vocalist. At first glance, their histories seem random. But weave those experiences together and you get a sound you can feel.

Or, the Whale’s songs range from danceable, rhythm-charged country-rock ditties with swaggering bass lines and articulately stomped-out drums to indie pop-rock tunes with bopping piano, snapping drums, and loops of finger-plucked guitar that explode into electric riffs to add fuel to fervent vocals. Slow it down and throw in some four-part harmonies, vibrant organ passages, and rippling pedal steel, and songs escalate into thoughtful ballads.

When it comes down to it Or, the Whale’s music can fly spirited and boisterous or topple lonely and bereaved. Hell, sometimes it does all those things in one song. Stories of hope and longing emerge from soothing, stirring vocals and twangy rock instrumentation. The latest evidence of this is on their first full-length album, Light Poles and Pines.

At times, Light Poles and Pines is omnipotent and epic (“Life and Death at Sea”), painfully reflective (“Rope Don’t Break”), or both (“Fight Song”). On “Life and Death at Sea,” defeated, raspy lead vocals sink under a whining pedal steel until pulled up by a rousing harmony. The two voices blend and are joined for a powerful chorus that valiantly leads the song back into the light of hope. And really, that’s the secret behind Or, the Whale’s draw: their songs are honest, intelligent, musically compelling reflections that act like the light off of a beacon, shining over the darkest, choppiest waters.

Producer Lloyd Maines recalls hearing The Stairwell Sisters for the first time: “I happened upon this tribe of
women musicians, playing old-time string music, with the power and excitement of a great rock band.”
Tribe of women indeed. Evie Ladin explains what holds sway with the sisters, themes similarly found in one of
their early influences, Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard: “not exactly the sweet and tender ladies, but the stand up
for yourself and face the world kind of women.”
Which is exactly the kind of women that make up The Stairwell Sisters. Evie, Stephanie Prausnitz. Lisa Berman,
Martha Hawthorne, and Sue Sandlin are career women, organizers, activists and mamas; making ends meet
working and living in San Francisco. They also happen to crank out acoustic, old-time music with a punk-rock
intensity. Somehow, between raising children, working and releasing records, they’ve taken their band to some
rather well-regarded places – appearing on A Prairie Home Companion, festival stages from Lincoln Center
(NYC) and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (SF) to Celtic Connections (UK), and many points in between.
Their third release Get Off Your Money, produced by Maines and out May 12, covers substantial ground as well.
There are fiddle tunes crafted decades ago from Alabama to Scotland, and from points unknown. There are old
songs of trains, boats and possums. One song is translated from Swahili, an all-too familiar story learned
from a street musician in Tanzania. There are new songs too – original songs of trial and work, loss and love,
and all-night parties. The women run all of it through the “Sister Mill.” Regardless from which era or continent
the songs have traveled, The Stairwell Sisters make such heartfelt and skillfully played music that boundaries
dissolve beneath the chugging force of old-time fiddle and banjo, the whomp of bass and guitar, the grit of the
slide guitar, and the tight, closely interwoven harmonies.
The Stairwell Sisters come from varied musical backgrounds, some from acoustic traditions, others through
amped-up rock and roll. Sue Sandlin says hearing Flatt and Scruggs brought her back to the country music
her family loved, “It was akin to the hair raising excitement I felt the first time I heard The Clash as a
teenager.” The Sisters are all about bringing that excitement to the stage. Lauded for infectious shows that
combine buckdancing with balladry and sass, these women unfailingly play their instruments hell-bent to
drive the music.
The driving tune “Kentucky Winder,” leads off the album with a crooked jump in the beat that fiddler Stephanie
Prausnitz says, “really wallops the punch.” Stephanie also brought the mischievous title song Get Off Your
Money to the group, having found it on a recording of old Alabama Fiddlers. Its whimsical happiness is the essence
of what makes playing together so much fun.
